According to Bitstamp data, the number two digital asset by market capitalization rocketed to an intraday peak of $2,112 before retreating to consolidate just under $2,090.<\/p>\n<p> <iframe src=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/ethereum\/embed\" width=\"100%\" style=\"max-height:500px;height:500px;border:none;overflow:hidden;border-radius:4px\" scrolling=\"no\" title=\"ethereum market data\"><\/iframe> <\/p>\n<p>Before that, ETH had languished below $1,900 since Aug. 8, except for brief moments when buying pressure saw it break through the threshold. That changed Aug. 19 when the unexpected U.S. Treasury announcement sent the cryptocurrency market surging, with Bitcoin falling <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/market-updates\/bitcoins-70k-rip-vaporizes-1-9b-as-shorts-get-steamrolled\/\">just short of the $70,000 mark<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The digital asset\u2019s nearly 10% jump lifted ETH\u2019s market capitalization from under $230 billion to $251 billion. The surge also pushed the total market cap for altcoins above $1 trillion for the first time in nearly a month.<\/p>\n<p>Market analyst Micha\u00ebl van de Poppe, chief investment officer and founder of MN Fund, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CryptoMichNL\/status\/2090141496808784323\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">characterized the price action<\/a> as a \u201cphenomenal breakout\u201d for ETH.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think it will stall \u2014 not at all \u2014 but after such a move, I\u2019d much rather see it consolidate for a little,\u201d van de Poppe remarked, adding that he is looking to buy dip opportunities. \u201cAs long as this remains above $2,000, the markets should expect a continuation towards $2,250, a $2,465 high, and potentially even $2,900 as a target zone. If we\u2019re going to make a higher high, the bear markets are over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, privacy coin Zcash (ZEC) also <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/market-updates\/zec-breaks-500-as-4-3-daily-gain-puts-xmr-further-behind\/\">outperformed the broader market<\/a>, jumping from just over $503 to peak at $557. Like the rest of the cryptocurrency market, the bulk of ZEC\u2019s gains occurred in just over an hour, underlining how the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/crypto-news\/treasury-doubles-long-end-buybacks-as-bitcoin-and-us-stocks-advance\/\">Treasury\u2019s move catalyzed trading<\/a>. The coin\u2019s 9% jump lifted its market cap to $9.3 billion, widening its lead over Monero (XMR), which fell 0.9%.<\/p>\n<p>Other notable gainers included HYPE, XRP, and SOL, which all jumped more than 6%, and XLM, which rose 7.5%.
