Starkware described it as the first post-quantum-resistant bitcoin transaction executed under the network\u2019s existing consensus rules.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast night, we submitted the first QSB transaction on Bitcoin mainnet,\u201d Starknet Foundation Vice President of Growth Damo said during a Bitcoin Asia keynote. \u201cIt required no soft forks, it required no hard forks, it required no core protocol upgrades.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The transaction spent a 10,000-satoshi output and was mined through MARA Foundation\u2019s Slipstream service because its nonstandard format would not normally propagate through Bitcoin\u2019s public mempool.<\/p>\n<h2>QSB Replaces Signature Risk With Hash-Based Security<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitcoin.com\/get-started\/how-bitcoin-transactions-work\/?_gl=1*1575omt*_ga*MjE1MTQ4MjQ1LjE3NzA5OTgxMTI.*_ga_LKPRS3F1JD*czE3ODc5MzU2MDUkbzIwJGcxJHQxNzg3OTM2ODI3JGo0MiRsMCRoMA..*_gcl_au*ODc0NjYyNzQuMTc4NjYyMDA1MA..*_ga_ERLPF60ZDD*czE3ODc5MzU2MDUkbzM1NyRnMSR0MTc4NzkzNjgyNyRqNDIkbDAkaDA.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bitcoin spending<\/a> relies on elliptic-curve cryptography, which could eventually be vulnerable to sufficiently powerful quantum computers running Shor\u2019s algorithm.<\/p>\n<p>The risk becomes particularly important once a public key is exposed. A quantum attacker could theoretically derive the corresponding private key and attempt to redirect funds before a legitimate transaction confirms.<\/p>\n<p>QSB approaches the problem differently. Levy\u2019s design adds a quantum-resistant spending condition based on hash functions and uses a technique known as signature grinding. Much of the computational work happens offchain before the transaction is broadcast.<\/p>\n<p>The mainnet test reportedly required hours of GPU computation and cost roughly $150 to $200.<\/p>\n<p>Levy first published the research in April before Starkware engineer Tomer Giladi helped bring the construction to a working mainnet transaction. Levy also credited earlier work by BitVM creator Robin Linus and researcher Ethan Heilman.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_842993\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-842993\" style=\"width:1280px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-842993\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Avihu Levy on X<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Proof of Concept Is Not a Quantum Fix for Bitcoin<\/h2>\n<p>The result does not make bitcoin itself quantum-resistant.<\/p>\n<p>QSB remains opt-in, and funds must be moved into the protected construction before they are threatened. It cannot recover lost coins or protect funds whose public keys have already been exposed long enough for a future quantum attacker to target them.<\/p>\n<p>Starkware CEO Eli Ben-Sasson also continues to favor a protocol-level solution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI still want Bitcoin to choose to do a soft fork, and I expect we will get one,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat today\u2019s successful transaction offers bitcoin is a reassurance that holdings can be protected before that happens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For bitcoin, that distinction matters.
