Support ran higher in Reykjavik, while opposition reached about 60% across rural areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Iceland applied for EU membership in 2009 before talks stopped in 2013. The latest result means the current government will not restart negotiations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">For crypto regulation, EU membership and MiCA remain separate questions. Iceland does not automatically apply EU regulations because it is an EEA member rather than an EU state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">However, MiCA related legislation can enter Iceland through incorporation into the EEA Agreement. That process is already developing, with the EEA Joint Committee incorporating several technical measures linked to Regulation EU 2023\/1114 during 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Ella Nummelin said:<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><em>\u201cAs an EEA member rather than an EU Member State, Iceland is not automatically subject to MiCA.
