Key drivers behind the rally included a U.S. Treasury announcement to <a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/press-releases\/sb0607\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">double its bond buybacks<\/a>, coupled with dovish commentary from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, which together pushed the aggregate crypto market cap beyond $2.7 trillion.<\/p>\n<p>While critics warned that the U.S. Treasury\u2019s strategy<a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/finance\/druckenmiller-blasts-treasurys-4b-gambit-as-bitcoin-bulls-circle\/\"> posed dire risks to the American financial system<\/a>, crypto advocates\u2014and bitcoin maximalists in particular\u2014viewed the policy shifts as ultimate vindication. To the crypto faithful, the moves echoed the aggressive monetary expansion and ensuing currency debasement that ultimately prompted Satoshi Nakamoto to launch bitcoin in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, bitcoin spiked on the news, rising from around $63,500 to $79,000 initially before breaching the $81,000 mark more than twice. Although it appeared to lose bullish momentum toward the end of the month, bitcoin\u2019s gains following the Treasury announcement ensured it would <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/market-updates\/bitcoin-price-holds-above-78-5k-as-august-gains-near-25\/\">end August up by nearly 25%<\/a>. These gains not only helped trim bitcoin\u2019s year-to-date losses to just over 10%, but they also raised the possibility that it could still end 2026 with net gains.<\/p>\n<h2>Privacy Coins Lead Large-Cap Performance<\/h2>\n<p>While bitcoin provided much of the market\u2019s heavy lifting, it was outpaced by several large-cap altcoins. The top spot actually went to privacy coin Zcash (ZEC), which surged from roughly $472 at the start of August to peak near $890 on Aug. 30. Despite a slight pullback to close the month just above $860, ZEC\u2019s 82% gain made it August\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/market-updates\/zcashs-19x-rally-may-have-more-room-as-grayscale-eyes-bitcoin-share\/\">top-performing high-cap digital asset<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Hyperliquid (HYPE) also outpaced bitcoin, logging gains more than double those of the market leader. HYPE capped its late-August rally by touching a record high of $86.71 on Aug. 27 before closing the month up 62%\u2014a surge that allowed it to unseat DOGE as the 10th-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization. Beyond the general bullish momentum lifting the market, HYPE received a major catalyst when President Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/altcoins\/trumps-hyperliquid-name-drop-sends-hype-charging-toward-record-highs\/\">name-dropped the decentralized platform<\/a> at a White House event, signaling potential support for a compliant U.S. framework.<\/p>\n<p>Also among August\u2019s top performers was another privacy coin, monero (XMR). Unlike ZEC, which saw sharp price swings on its way up, XMR rose gradually, and by Aug. 31 it nearly reached $540 after starting the month trading at just over $360. The privacy coin ultimately ended with gains of nearly 45%. The past month was also <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/crypto-news\/solana-breaks-10-month-curse-as-institutional-money-storms-in\/\">particularly good for solana<\/a> (SOL) as it finally reclaimed the $100 threshold. Market data show that after reaching a multi-month high of just under $110 on Aug. 27, SOL retreated to $102, leaving it with 30-day gains exceeding 40%.<\/p>\n<p>There were also market-beating gains for LINK, ETH and XRP, which jumped 37%, 32% and 28%, respectively.
