The deep web platform is called Nexus, and it was reportedly advertised on the Russian-language forum known as Exploit. <a href=\"https:\/\/krebsonsecurity.com\/2026\/09\/fbi-probes-service-selling-153m-drivers-licenses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">According to the Krebs story<\/a>, 153 million driver\u2019s licenses from U.S. and Canadian citizens are being sold. Alongside this, millions of other identity documents are also available for purchase.<\/p>\n<p>On Sept. 1, Krebs also wrote that the team \u201chas learned that the New Orleans field office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) today launched an official inquiry into the source of the images.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nexus claims to hold 153,347,439 driver\u2019s license records from people from both countries. Also, the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/woman-sentenced-to-prison-for-bitcoin-funded-dark-web-murder-plot\/\">dark web sellers<\/a> say they have 10,335,678 identification card records, 3,304,030 travel documents and passports, and 579,000 medical cards too. Reports say that the bulk of the records were of American individuals. The thieves also bragged that the allotment of scans contained an ID for <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/pentagon-eyes-bitcoin-infrastructure-as-strategic-asset-hegseth-says\/\">U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth<\/a>, specifically his driver\u2019s license.<\/p>\n<h2>Crypto Voices Erupt Over KYC After Massive Identity Leak<\/h2>\n<p>The leak and discovery have been a trending topic on social media platforms like X, Facebook, and Reddit. Members of the crypto community are also sharing their two cents. Venice.ai and Shapeshift founder Erik Voorhees slammed Know Your Customer (KYC) regulations. \u201cKYC is a bullsh** scam that endangers millions of innocent people so that regulators can feel as if they\u2019re providing value to the world,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ErikVoorhees\/status\/2095319741716193431?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Voorhees remarked on X<\/a> about the U.S. and Canadian driver\u2019s license leak.<\/p>\n<p>The popular crypto account on X known as TFTC stated: \u201cKYC and AML policy does far more to put innocent people in harm\u2019s way than it does to catch criminals. Motivated criminals route around compliance with stolen identities, mules, shell companies, and corrupt insiders. The law-abiding person does what the screen tells him. Scans his license. Then his face. Then trusts a company he\u2019s never heard of because a rental counter or exchange demanded it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TFTC21\/status\/2095180094172197251?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TFTC added:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe criminal gets another obstacle to route around. The innocent person gets added to another honeypot.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Speaking with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiitribune-herald.com\/2026\/09\/03\/nation-world-news\/fbi-probes-report-of-data-breach-exposing-millions-of-drivers-licenses-in-us-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hawaii Tribune Herald news outlet<\/a>, threat researcher Zach Edwards of Infoblox called the incident unprecedented. \u201cThere\u2019s never been a breach of driver\u2019s licenses at this scale,\u201d the researcher insisted. He also argued that the breach \u201ccreated legitimate national security risks for high-profile individuals.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>FBI Inquiry Leaves Millions Waiting for Answers<\/h2>\n<p>While the FBI commented to some of the cybersecurity researchers, it has not published a formal press release on its official website. Investigators have not disclosed a definitive source of the data or the actual number of driver\u2019s licenses confirmed to be leaked. This leaves millions of Americans and Canadians left guessing. As of writing, it is unknown whether or not <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/featured\/fbi-seizes-chinese-hacking-platforms-used-to-target-us-agencies\/\">federal law enforcement authorities<\/a>
