Intersango was the first UK exchange to offer pound-based bitcoin trading in 2011, taking bank deposits to fund accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, at the time, Chris did not withdraw his bitcoin investment <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitcoin.com\/get-started\/wallet-security\/wallets-custody\/custodial-non-custodial-bitcoin-wallets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to a self-custody wallet<\/a>, and instead left them under exchange custody. This proved to be a mistake, as Intersango shut down in early 2014, leaving customers without access to their funds and with limited options, as the platform was not <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/britains-financial-watchdog-to-stop-lending-for-crypto-asset-purchases\/\">licensed by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).<\/a><\/p>\n<p>His investment had already more than doubled, and he described how he felt when he lost access.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIt was a bit of a shock when it happened. It wasn\u2019t really money that I wanted to lose,\u201d<\/strong> he stated.<\/p>\n<p>Then he had to watch bitcoin prices grow, adding to his disappointment at losing access to his funds, but he had lost hope of recovering them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIt was a punch in the stomach watching bitcoin go up and up. After a while, I stopped watching it because I thought: \u2018there\u2019s no point, it\u2019s lost\u2026 I had written them off,\u201d<\/strong> Chris declared.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, in 2018, he started receiving emails from Intersango\u2019s founders to contact former exchange customers and reach out, but he<a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/regulation-and-legal\/us-and-uk-form-first-of-its-kind-alliance-against-crypto-scams\/\"> disregarded them as scam attempts<\/a>. Even so, at his wife\u2019s behest, he contacted CEL Solicitors, a firm that deals with recovering lost cryptocurrency in similar cases.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan Sweetnam, Director of Financial Litigation at CEL Solicitors, recovered Chris\u2019 cryptocurrency, now worth 3.3 million pounds ($4.4 million). Sweetnam explained that the process was not as lengthy, but that <a href=\"https:\/\/celsolicitors.co.uk\/how-we-recovered-over-3-million-in-lost-bitcoin-from-a-defunct-uk-exchange\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">it took 4 months<\/a> for the firm to deliver all requested documents to U.S. courts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cAnd so that took quite a long time.
