Significant majorities of Baby Boomers and Gen X rejected the idea that sports betting is investing, though roughly a third of both groups still declined to treat event contracts as a legitimate investment, leaving the balance of those generations more open to the idea for prediction markets than for sportsbooks.<\/p>\n<p>Economist Taylor Bowley set out <a href=\"https:\/\/institute.bankofamerica.com\/economic-insights\/online-betting-platforms.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the report\u2019s main findings<\/a> directly. \u201cAccording to a Bank of America proprietary survey, 20% of respondents consider sports betting as a type of investment, although more consider it not a form of investing,\u201d she said. \u201cGen Z is twice as likely to consider sports betting as a form of investing; however, across all generations, buying event contracts on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitcoin.com\/get-started\/defi-and-web3\/prediction-markets\/what-are-prediction-markets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">prediction markets<\/a> was more likely to be considered an investment than sports betting.\u201d A key addition: \u201cPrediction markets, crypto assets, retail trading, and sports betting all share common features such as community participation and real-time pricing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This gap in perception or definition is the argument at the center of the industry\u2019s legal position. <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/igaming\/kalshis-scotus-pregame-wait-for-the-cftc-to-rewrite-the-rules\/\">Kalshi\u2019s defense against state gambling regulators<\/a>, now before the Supreme Court after New Jersey\u2019s certiorari petition, holds that sports event contracts are financial instruments under federal commodities law rather than wagers under state law. Many consumers appear to read them the same way.<\/p>\n<p>The blurring Bank of America describes has drawn notice from outside the sector. Asked in March whether he disapproved of \u201cprediction markets, of legalized sports gambling, even of day trading,\u201d Warren Buffett <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/buffett-lumps-prediction-markets-with-sports-betting-in-tax-on-stupidity-rebuke\/\">declined to separate the three<\/a>, saying state gambling revenue \u201cactually relieves the taxes on me or other rich people\u201d and agreeing that it amounted to \u201ca tax on stupidity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Within the industry, the comparison is treated as harder to make than it looks. Pierre Lindh, co-founder of iGaming media group Next.io, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/next-io-co-founder-says-insider-trading-in-prediction-markets-is-the-most-difficult-point-to-resolve\/\">told Bitcoin.com News in June<\/a> that the NBA Finals produced near-parity between sportsbooks and prediction markets in true handle, while cautioning that \u201cthe handle is not apples to apples in that regard, which makes the industry a little bit more difficult to compare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Separately from the survey, the bank tracked anonymized customer payments to and from betting platforms and found the online betting cash recovery ratio stayed below 1 across the January to July period. \u201cCustomers typically recover less than 75 cents for every dollar transferred to online betting platforms,\u201d Bowley said, though the research notes the data captures deposits and withdrawals only.
