Before its Upbit debut, JPYC’s busiest trading venue was Uniswap, where it primarily traded against the stablecoin USDC. When trading opened on Upbit at a reference price of 8.81 won, JPYC immediately jumped to 12 won.

It then quickly ripped past 27 won, and within an hour, Korean traders were paying 35.7 won for a single token. Upbit’s exchange chart shows a candle wick touching the 37 won range, where a token designed to maintain a 1:1 peg with the yen briefly traded at more than three times its intended value. Upbit announced the JPYC listing on the morning of Sept. 17, pairing the stablecoin against the won, tether and bitcoin.

After two separate delays pushed back its debut, trading finally opened. When Korean buying pressure slammed into the tiny pool of available tokens, JPYC’s peg quickly broke apart. The distortion spilled over to Uniswap as well, where residual effects briefly pushed prices toward three yen. Crypto assets such as bitcoin have traded at premiums in South Korea for years, but in all scenarios, the usual arbitrage mechanism for pulling the price back toward its peg is effectively nonexistent.

Record JPYC Minting Turns the Arbitrage Machine Back On

That missing arbitrage route, however, did not stay missing for long. Once JPYC Inc. restored issuance reservations, traders had a powerful incentive to mint JPYC at 1 yen and send fresh supply toward markets paying two, three, or even four times that amount. The response was enormous.

JPYC’s dashboard showed ¥1.68678 billion minted on Sept. 17 alone, more than 12 times the previous single-day record of ¥139.16 million. Within roughly 48 hours, circulating supply reportedly climbed from about ¥1.9 billion to more than ¥4.2 billion, and the extraordinary premium began disappearing almost as quickly as it had arrived. In the end, JPYC’s wild Upbit debut became a textbook demonstration of what happens when heavy retail demand collides with a painfully thin supply.

The Japanese stablecoin never stopped being redeemable for 1 yen through JPYC Inc., but for a few frantic hours, the secondary market told an entirely different story. Fresh issuance eventually caught up, arbitrage mechanics, not arbitrageurs, went to work, and the price drifted back toward its intended peg. Yet the episode left behind an extraordinary first impression for Japan’s regulated yen stablecoin: its first major overseas exchange listing briefly turned one yen into three, and in Upbit’s most extreme prints, nearly four.

Source link

(Originally posted on : Bitcoin News ) Key Takeaways JPYC briefly fetched over 3 yen on Upbit as Korean traders piled in after its Sept. 17 debut.
