In the 72 hours since, the whale has added roughly 505 BTC of selling and 15,642 ETH of buying.<\/p>\n<p> <iframe src=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/ethereum\/embed\" width=\"100%\" style=\"max-height:500px;height:500px;border:none;overflow:hidden;border-radius:4px\" scrolling=\"no\" title=\"ethereum market data\"><\/iframe> <\/p>\n<p>Staking is key here, as the coins sent to validators did not sit on an exchange ready to be dumped, suggestive of a medium-term bet. It also isn\u2019t the only rotation this month, given Bitcoin.com News reported on a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/crypto-news\/whale-sells-866-btc-26924-eth-bitcoin-price-clarity-act\/\">separate wallet that sold 866 BTC<\/a> for 26,924 ETH hours before the CLARITY Act vote on Sept. 15.<\/p>\n<p>The second buyer has made smaller, but stranger moves, with the wallet (0x4cee) having transferred three clusters around the 21st.<\/p>\n<p>Blockscout shows the wallet sent three genuine USDC transfers to its usual Binance deposit address that night: <a href=\"https:\/\/eth.blockscout.com\/tx\/0x1e4ac5ed2a203d4978e2cecb8369adbe69470390dbb3cf9b0e7b9c06162b892f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a 2 million test<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/eth.blockscout.com\/tx\/0x5e558104b1b774047d5233f03bcb5522943f590ff651c4f6e61e4762e3158690\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">then 18 million<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/eth.blockscout.com\/tx\/0x71916e9917c862ad2a242460befcf9d75b14aea26dae03bb39535e48b55b58bd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">then 12.17 million<\/a>, for a total of $32.17 million. That is below the $40 million figure circulating on social media, and it still leaves roughly $12 million of the deposit unaccounted for onchain, possibly still sitting on Binance for more buying. The wallet\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/eth.blockscout.com\/address\/0x4cee611502f378300981807d506629DA35cee4a7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ETH balance currently<\/a> shows about 7,568 ETH.<\/p>\n<h2>The Scammers Showed Up Within Minutes<\/h2>\n<p>Within minutes of the real deposits, the wallet\u2019s history was filled with fake transfers. More than two dozen lookalike token contracts spoofed \u201cUSDC\u201d and \u201cETH\u201d with <a href=\"https:\/\/eth.blockscout.com\/tx\/0x088bd57ad21ac45b6349cc80743ad74e05df04280a0bf44a33e9405e34e27b6d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">look-alike characters<\/a> in their tickers. They were routed to addresses that copied the first and last characters of the real Binance deposit address, and some even mimicked the exact 18 million and 12.17 million amounts.<\/p>\n<p>This is address poisoning, a bet that the owner copies the wrong address on the next deposit. The tactic <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/address-poisoning-scams-drain-millions-as-crypto-attacks-surge\/\">drained tens of millions of dollars<\/a> in January alone, including one $12.2 million loss. This time, every real transfer went to the right address.<\/p>\n<h2>Is the Rally Running on Whales Alone?<\/h2>\n<p>ETH is trading near $2,738 at press time, up about 6% in 24 hours and 11% over 30 days. It cleared Jan. 31\u2019s intraday high today, having first broken above $2,600 during the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/altcoins\/eth-price-surges-past-2600-as-cpi-data-triggers-squeeze\/\">Sept. 11 CPI squeeze<\/a>. Bitcoin\u2019s price, for its part, has moved upward in parallel, surging close to $85,000 over the past hour and lifting the whole market along with it.<\/p>\n<div class=\"not-prose my-3 lg:my-4\"><a
