For now, the page directs institutional buyers to a sales desk.<\/p>\n<h2>From Handshake to Launch<\/h2>\n<p>The launch has been a long time coming, with <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/ripple-expands-in-africa-as-institutional-demand-for-digital-custody-surges\/\">Ripple announcing the partnership<\/a> during October last year, describing Absa as its first major custody partner in Africa. At the time, Absa\u2019s head of digital product for custody, Robyn Lawson, <a href=\"https:\/\/cib.absa.africa\/home\/insights-and-events\/absa-bank-partners-with-ripple-to-expand-digital-asset-custody-offering-in-south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">was quoted as saying<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>[Ripple\u2019s system] let the bank leverage proven and trusted technology that meets the highest security and operational standards.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>While an eleven-month wait might appear to be worrisome, such developments (i.e. from signed deal to live product) are quite normal for large entities. Custody touches key management, audit, insurance and regulators, and Absa operates in more than one market. The group holds <a href=\"https:\/\/ripple.com\/ripple-press\/ripple-expands-global-custody-footprint-into-africa-with-absa-bank\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">majority stakes in banks<\/a> across 10 countries, including Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.<\/p>\n<h2>Why Does South Africa Make Sense Now?<\/h2>\n<p>South Africa has spent much of this year filling in its rulebook, especially since its Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) received 533 crypto asset service provider applications and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fanews.co.za\/article\/compliance-regulatory\/2\/financial-sector-conduct-authority-fsca-was-fsb\/1059\/update-on-licensing-and-supervision-of-crypto-asset-service-providers\/43764\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">approved 310 of them<\/a> (as of March 31, 2026). On May 28, the South African Reserve Bank (SARB), the FSCA, the Prudential Authority and the Financial Intelligence Centre issued a joint communication on crypto assets used for domestic payments. Days later, the regulators <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/south-africa-rules-out-foreign-stablecoins-as-payment-tools-to-curb-dollarization\/\">ruled out foreign-currency stablecoins<\/a> as local payment tools.<\/p>\n<p>The courts weighed in too and on June 1, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clydeco.com\/en\/insights\/2026\/06\/crypto-assets-in-south-africa-clarity-through-cont\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gauteng Division of the High Court<\/a> found that \u201cbitcoin is clearly money\u201d and counts as capital under exchange-control rules.<\/p>\n<p>Demand is there as well. A <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/from-speculation-to-stability-discovery-bank-report-reveals-7-8m-south-africans-now-invest-in-crypto\/\">Discovery Bank and Visa report<\/a> found about 7.8 million South Africans, roughly 13% of the population, now invest in crypto. Most hold it through local exchanges such as <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/luno-pushes-south-africa-to-rewrite-crypto-rules-through-parliament-not-proclamation\/\">Luno and Valr<\/a> rather than a bank, and that is the gap Absa is aiming at.<\/p>\n<h2>Ripple\u2019s Custody Push Keeps Adding Banks<\/h2>\n<p>For Ripple, Absa is another name on a growing list for its custody business as earlier in February, the company <a href=\"https:\/\/ripple.com\/ripple-press\/ripple-accelerates-institutional-custody-adoption-with-security-compliance-and-staking-capabilities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">added Securosys hardware<\/a> security modules and Figment staking to Ripple Custody. Figment alone serves more than 1,000 institutional clients.<\/p>\n<p>Ripple says its wider business holds 60-plus regulatory licenses and registrations across the regions it serves. Lastly, it bears mentioning that the launch landed on a strong day for the market, with XRP trading near $1.48, up about 6.7% in 24 hours.<\/p>\n<div class=\"not-prose my-3 lg:my-4\"><a
