Then, on Tuesday, Sept. 22, the coins moved.

At Bitcoin block height 968116, a wallet dating to July 14, 2012, transferred its entire 600 BTC balance from a legacy address into a Segwit-P2WPKH-format wallet before splitting the stash between two separate wallets. Whale Alert, Galaxy Research and Btcparser.com each flagged the movement, putting another long-dormant bitcoin fortune back on the radar.

Nearly 14 Years of Doing Nothing

The math is almost silly. Bitcoin traded near $7.52 when the wallet was created in 2012, meaning 600 BTC carried a market value of roughly $4,512. At Tuesday’s press-time bitcoin price of $86,012, those same coins command $51,607,392. That works out to more than 11,400 times the stash’s July 2012 value.

Put another way, every $1 of bitcoin valued at that day’s market price corresponds to roughly $11,438 today. No frantic trading. No rotating through hundreds of tokens. No trying to time every top and bottom. The address simply sat there while bitcoin went through booms, crashes, exchange collapses, halvings, and several generations of investors. Interestingly, patience did all the heavy lifting.

The Coins Move, but They Weren’t Necessarily Sold

Here’s the wrinkle. Moving the bitcoin doesn’t mean selling it. The 600 BTC went from a legacy wallet to another wallet and was subsequently split across two newer wallets. That could represent anything from routine wallet maintenance and improved address management to preparations for another transaction. The blockchain records where bitcoin moves, not what its owner is thinking or doing.

Still, when bitcoin this old wake up, people notice. September has already produced a hefty run of so-called sleeping bitcoin movements, with long-idle holdings suddenly stirring after years without activity. This one carries a particularly striking timestamp: July 2012.

Bitcoin’s Rally Makes the Timing Hard to Miss

The transfer also arrived while bitcoin was picking up steam. Bitcoin’s price traded at $86,012 at the time of writing, up 1.8% over the past 24 hours and 11.6% over the past week. On Monday, it reached an intraday high of $87,374, its highest level since January.

On the flip side, none of Tuesday’s blockchain activity establishes that the owner plans to cash out. The 600 BTC remain bitcoin, just arranged differently onchain. That leaves a $51.6 million question hanging over a wallet that began life when its entire balance was worth less than the price of many used cars today: After nearly 14 years of waiting, why move now?

Source link

(Originally posted on : Bitcoin News ) Key Takeaways A 2012 bitcoin wallet moved 600 BTC, now worth $51.6 million.
