By the time it arrives, the convenience argument for holding digital assets has worn thin.

“The ability to bring a valuable solution to a problem is always a win in business. We have created a simple way for people to use their stablecoins in their everyday lives. This is a race we will win,” said David Imonitie, head of US sales at BIX.

How it works

BIX is an app combining a self-custody wallet with a Visa card. Users hold USDC or USDT across supported networks including Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain, Base, Solana and Optimism, and spend against that balance using a card accepted wherever Visa is.

The merchant sees a standard Visa transaction and receives fiat. From the user’s side, it is a tap.

What it costs

Standard membership is free. A virtual Visa card is $9.99, works immediately for online payments and sits in a mobile wallet for contactless use. The company says there are no funding fees. The US programme applies a 1% FX fee on applicable foreign-currency purchases, which matters most for travel and for buying from overseas retailers.

Spending limits are, in the company’s description, flexible and customizable based on the user’s deposited collateral, subject to programme requirements.

Who it suits

The clearest fit is someone already holding stablecoins and tired of the conversion loop.

“Everyone gets the concept right away, but the customer who is already familiar with cryptocurrency, and some of the challenges they face in spending their digital assets, is absolutely excited about the BIX debit card and its ability to solve a huge issue in the market,” Imonitie said.

The roadmap points at a wider group. Virtual accounts, arriving with the $119-a-year BIX Plus membership, will support incoming payments and outgoing fiat transfers connecting stablecoins with ACH, SEPA and SWIFT, including account details such as IBANs. That turns the app from a spending tool into something a freelancer could invoice through, or a family could use to send money across borders.

Plus will also bring access to Visa Signature cards, with eligible benefits such as airport lounge access, rental-car insurance and travel discounts. Packages depend on programme and country, and lounge access does not necessarily include complimentary visits. Physical cards are planned separately at $99, with a 0.6% BIX ATM withdrawal fee.

The caveats

BIX currently supports eligible residents of 29 US states, subject to identity verification and programme requirements, with expansion to 49 states targeted within six to eight months, subject to applicable approvals and partner readiness. Prospective users elsewhere will have to wait.

It is also worth being clear about what BIX is. It is a finance app, not a bank. Card issuing and other regulated financial services are delivered through third-party institutions under their respective arrangements.

The direction of travel

The features that would complete the picture, direct wallet-linked spending chief among them, remain ahead rather than shipped. But the underlying idea is simple enough that its eventual arrival looks less like a bet than a matter of timing: the money someone holds and the money they spend should be the same money, in the same app, without a detour in between.

More at bix.fi and on Instagram.

_________________________________________________________________________

Bitcoin.com accepts no responsibility or liability, and shall not be liable, whether directly or indirectly, for any loss, damage, claim, cost, or expense of any kind, whether actual, alleged, or consequential, arising out of or in connection with the use of, or reliance upon, any content, goods, or services referenced in this article.
