licenses.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>ESMA to Focus on Crypto Assets Supervision and Surveillance in 2027<\/h2>\n<p>The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), the EU\u2019s financial market watchdog, has published its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esma.europa.eu\/sites\/default\/files\/2026-09\/ESMA22-50751485-1673_Annual_Work_Programme_2027.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2027 Work Program<\/a>, featuring crypto-assets front and center <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/esma-tells-unauthorized-crypto-firms-to-wind-down-as-mica-deadline-hits-in-3-days\/\">following the full implementation<\/a> of the Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) framework.<\/p>\n<p>Verena Ross, Chair of ESMA, stressed that this coming year, the institution would simplify and modernize its market supervision processes through<strong> \u201cgreater use of data and technology.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Regarding crypto assets, ESMA stressed that it would continue <strong>\u201cstrong cooperation with National Competent Authorities (NCAs), including on supervision of crypto-asset service providers (CASPs) under MiCA.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In practice, this means ESMA will standardize supervision of crypto assets through new rules and the periodic reporting of sensitive information for crypto-asset service providers (CASPs).<\/p>\n<p>The regulator also expects MIDAS, its centralized market surveillance system, to be fully operational in its first phase next year, using it to identify and prevent <strong>\u201cpotential market abuse cases.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tokenization will also be another area where ESMA will focus its action next year, mentioning the completion of support tasks, including issuing guidance and non-binding opinions, for the ongoing DLT Pilot Regime as an objective.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cTokenization will remain as a priority for ESMA, further expanding the work on the opportunities it can bring to the EU capital markets,\u201d<\/strong> the institution declared <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esma.europa.eu\/press-news\/esma-news\/esma-sets-2027-priorities-stronger-simpler-and-more-integrated-eu-capital\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in a press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>ESMA has been <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/esma-warns-prediction-market-platforms-could-face-strict-eu-financial-regulations\/\">reviewing the activities of event contracts markets<\/a>, also known as prediction markets, and it will keep discussing how to achieve convergence of its supervision tasks across the EU next year.<\/p>\n<p>In this sense, it has already <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/esma-says-eu-retail-ban-covers-many-prediction-markets-with-mica-awaiting-the-tokenized-ones\/\">warned that many of these platforms fall under binary options regulation<\/a> and should be licensed under MiFID II (Markets in Financial Instruments Directive II).<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cAs financial markets continue to evolve, I know that ESMA and its
