The ruling followed Ontario Superior Court Justice Shaun Nakatsuru\u2019s refusal to grant Pleterski\u2019s adjournment request.<\/p>\n<p>According to a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/crypto-king-aiden-pleterski-will-represent-himself-at-his-fraud-trial-next-week-9.7361265\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> local report<\/a>, Pleterski, the self-described \u201cCrypto King,\u201d asked for the delay to give himself more time to secure legal counsel. While self-representation carries risks, including missing procedural requirements and poor presentation of evidence, Nakatsuru assured Pleterski that the court will endeavor to give him a fair trial.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to assure you that even though this isn\u2019t your first choice, obviously \u2014 you will receive a fair trial. I want you to be very free in asking questions \u2026 don\u2019t hesitate, just get up on your feet and ask me,\u201d Nakatsuru said.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the judge told Pleterski that he will make objections on his behalf to ensure only admissible evidence reaches the jury.<\/p>\n<h2>Arguments Over Adjournment<\/h2>\n<p>As previously reported by Bitcoin.com News, Pleterski, along with Colin Murphy, was charged with fraud over $5,000 and laundering proceeds of crime under the Criminal Code of Canada. At that time, Pleterski\u2019s parents posted a $100,000 surety for his bail, while Murphy was released on an undertaking.<\/p>\n<p>In a submission for an adjournment, Pleterski\u2019s lawyer argued that the delay would give the defendant\u2019s extended family enough time to liquidate assets to help him retain an attorney for the trial. However, Crown attorney Scott Patterson argued Pleterski has not been \u201chonest and genuine\u201d in his attempts to obtain counsel.<\/p>\n<p>The charges stem from Pleterski\u2019s role in a failed cryptocurrency investment scheme in which investors lost more than $40 million.
