The positions are still open, and they both appear to be running pieces of the same enormous short book. At 2:55 p.m. Eastern time on Oct. 6, 2026, both Hyperliquid wallets have net short exposure totaling around $1.58 billion.<\/p>\n<p>This tally includes 189,400 ETH and 5,120 BTC, but these positions can change fast. <a href=\"https:\/\/hypurrscan.io\/address\/0xb83de012dba672c76a7dbbbf3e459cb59d7d6e36#perps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Onchain statistics<\/a> collected from hypurrscan.io show that the wallets\u2019 combined bitcoin and ether <a href=\"https:\/\/hypurrscan.io\/address\/0x5b5d51203a0f9079f8aeb098a6523a13f298c060#perps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hyperliquid positions<\/a> are worth roughly $948 million in total, and right now, there\u2019s a paper loss of around $114.5 million.<\/p>\n<p>These two addresses have a great deal of assets to hold down any such losses, and they both have logged millions in deposits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpot holdings may offset these shorts, so the positions alone do not establish the wallets\u2019 net market exposure,\u201d the AI X bot Hyperbot wrote about the positions.<\/p>\n<p>Besides the weight of these two wallets in terms of market value, what\u2019s more interesting is the entity behind them. Blockchain explorers like Nansen and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/arkham-intelligence-ranks-polymarket-traders-by-skill-top-forecaster-hits-66-1-win-rate\/\">Arkham Intelligence<\/a> label the addresses as belonging to Abraxas Capital Management, a London investment firm that manages billions. Arkham\u2019s label says \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/arkm.com\/explorer\/address\/0xB83DE012dbA672c76A7dbbbf3E459CB59D7D6E36\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Abraxas Capital Mgmt (Heka Funds)<\/a>\u201d and the entity\u2019s balances have increased significantly in recent times.<\/p>\n<h2>What the Whale\u2019s Shorts May Really Mean<\/h2>\n<p>The wallets and <a href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/glossary\/perpetuals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">perpetual futures (perp) trades<\/a> are readily visible on blockchain explorers, but they reveal little about the entity\u2019s overall strategy, which is considerably more difficult to assess. Still, the books for these two wallets on Hyperliquid are overwhelmingly positioned short and not just with BTC and ETH. The addresses also hold smaller short positions against SOL, HYPE, ENA, XRP, SUI, and PUMP, among other assets.<\/p>\n<p>A concentration of bearish bets like these can signal various methods like hedging and provisioning, instead of <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/regulation-and-legal\/trump-teleprompter-operator-fined-172k-after-dominating-kalshi-bets\/\">insiders knowing<\/a> exactly where the market will go. Alongside this, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/crypto-news\/whale-sells-866-btc-26924-eth-bitcoin-price-clarity-act\/\">visible whale positioning<\/a> can distort crowd psychology, and you best believe that whales know this.
