The underlying trading protocol will continue to function and can be accessed via smart contract interactions and aggregators, but the branded Blur marketplace will cease to exist this time next month.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, Blur\u2019s NFT-backed lending protocol, Blend, will stop facilitating loans on the same date, per <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/blur_io\/status\/2109735871377289375\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an X post<\/a>. \u201cBorrowers have until then to repay their loans or allow them to default,\u201d it reads. \u201cAfter this date, we will provide a frontend tool to help users withdraw their assets from Blend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Blur launched in late 2022 after the NFT bull market of 2021 and early 2022 was already losing steam, but it shook up the space early the following year by overtaking the dominant rival marketplace, Opensea. That move was fueled in large part by offering traders a share of a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/nft-marketplace-blur-launches-native-token-blur-price-drops-85-in-a-matter-of-hours\/\">BLUR token airdrop<\/a>, prompting billions of dollars\u2019 worth of Ethereum NFT trades.<\/p>\n<p>However, Blur\u2019s rise was controversial among NFT enthusiasts. While the airdrop amounted to a giveaway of free crypto cash for users, some collectors believed the resulting avalanche of rapid trading devalued the non-fungible assets, with some analysts labeling the trading volume as \u201cwash trading.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Blur <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/122369\/wash-trading-blur-ethereum-nfts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">defended its model to Decrypt<\/a> in 2023, saying the volume surge was \u201cmisunderstood\u201d by some analysts. But as NFT prices broadly continued to sink, the platform continued to take heat from pockets of the industry. Early momentum on Blur cooled significantly as the appeal of token incentives faded with the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/blur-token-plummets-over-28-in-march-despite-blurs-dominance-in-nft-sales-market\/\">falling price of BLUR<\/a>, however.<\/p>\n<p>Over the last year, data from <a href=\"https:\/\/tokenterminal.com\/explorer\/projects\/blur\/metrics\/trading-volume\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Token Terminal<\/a> shows Opensea back on top with $557 million worth of NFT trading volume, compared to $235 million for Blur. Per the same data resource, Blur\u2019s trading volume across all of September tallied $19.15 million, compared to a peak month of nearly $1.43 billion back in March 2023.<\/p>\n<p>While Blur\u2019s relevance as a prominent NFT marketplace has faded in recent years, some of the hard feelings still linger among collectors. \u201cGood riddance. You destroyed NFTs. Please shut down and never come back,\u201d one X user <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Cryptobscure\/status\/2109745153812648012\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">replied<\/a> to the post. Another <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/serc1n\/status\/2109746081399820569\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">suggested<\/a> that Blur\u2019s exit would be the \u201cbottom signal for NFTs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, Blur founder Tieshun \u201cPacman\u201d Roquerre announced that Blast\u2014an Ethereum Layer 2 network launched in 2024\u2014would <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/blockchain\/ethereum-layer-2-network-blast-shut-down-revenue-collapse\/\">also shut down<\/a>, with plans to take the network offline on October 26. Another Layer 2 network, Abstract, is set to <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/blockchain\/pudgy-penguins-team-shutter-ethereum-layer-2-network-abstract\/\">close down in December<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Blur isn\u2019t the only marketplace to shut down in 2026 as NFT demand remains diminished. Once-prominent platforms <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/nft-marketplace-nifty-gateway-to-close-platform-enter-withdrawal%e2%80%91only-mode\/\">Nifty Gateway<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/digital-art-nft-marketplace-foundation-closes-after-failed-acquisition-in-early-2026\/\">Foundation<\/a> both shuttered this year, while former top marketplace Magic Eden <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/nft-marketplace-magic-eden-streamlines-operations-to-focus-on-solana-and-dicey-gambling\/\">significantly scaled back support<\/a> amid a pivot towards gambling.<\/p>\n<p>The price of BLUR fell to a new low on Tuesday, crashing 35% in the last 24 hours to $0.0115\u2014down 99.8% from its all-time high above $5.00.<\/p>\n<div class=\"not-prose my-3
